Escalator meaning
An escalator is a fixed, electrically powered transportation device composed of a specially structured chain conveyor and two uniquely designed belt conveyors. It features a circulating moving staircase used to transport passengers up or down between different levels of a building. As a continuous transport mechanism, it efficiently carries people between floors.
Classification of Escalators
1. Classification by Handrail Decoration
- Fully Transparent Type: An escalator with a fully transparent glass balustrade. Based on the shape of the glass balustrade, it can be further divided into curved glass type and flat glass type.
- Opaque Type: An escalator with a balustrade made of opaque metal or other materials. Since the handrail bracket is fixed on the upper part of the balustrade and the handrail moves in a continuous loop along the guide rail, the opaque type offers greater stability compared to the fully transparent type. It is mainly used in subways, stations, docks, and other high-traffic areas with significant height differences.
- Semi-Transparent Type: An escalator with a semi-transparent balustrade, such as one made of semi-transparent glass or other materials.
In terms of handrail decoration, fully transparent glass balustrades must meet a certain strength requirement, with a minimum thickness of 6mm. Due to their superior decorative effect, most escalators use flat, fully transparent glass for the balustrade.
2. Classification by Step Drive Method
- Chain Drive: An escalator where the steps are driven by a chain mechanism.
- Rack Drive: An escalator where the steps are driven by a rack mechanism.
Due to its simple structure and lower manufacturing cost, the chain drive system is the most commonly used escalator drive method.
3. Classification by Lifting Height
- Small Lifting Height Escalator: Lifting height 3–10m.
- Medium Lifting Height Escalator: Lifting height 10–45m.
- Large Lifting Height Escalator: Lifting height 45–65m.
